THE ENCOUNTERS: ANKARA KHAN REGION

KARŞILAŞMALAR (appl. in 2023)

Main Goal

The encounters intends to interpret the historical, cultural, and environmental significance of the Ankara Khan region, and to retrieve the experienced insight for developing locally meaningful conservation strategies that can effectively preserve its unique heritage. The project not only takes into account the physical aspects of the site, but also emphasizes the importance of the human element. By creating a co-generative setting in which participants can construct shared experiences and decipher their affective responses, the aim is to allow a more transcendent experience and nuanced understanding of the area.

To accomplish this, the project creates a dynamic and inclusive open learning environment through art interfaces, such as music, dance and video art. Participants are encouraged to freely express their emotional and embodied experiences and engage in thoughtful discussions. By fostering a sense of creativity and exploration, the project seeks to inspire innovative approaches to placer (?place?) thinking and promote a deeper connection with the Ankara Khan region. Through an interdisciplinary and participatory approach, Ensemble II aims at empowering individuals to become active stewards of their cultural and natural heritage.

The content is composed of seven parts:

  1. Collectively document all notes, drawings, pictures, and videos using a digital platform.

  2. Exploring art interfaces such as poems, writings, drawings, pictures, paintings, videos, and music that represent spatial experiences and evoke affective responses.

  3. Practicing body movement and rhythm exercises on the streets of the khan region.

  4. Producing videos representing individual, collective, or shared experiences.

  5. Present the outcomes in a seminar and performance setting to a larger audience, including planners, decision-makers, and members of civil society in the Erimtan Museum located in the Ankara Khan region.

Innovation

Ensemble II integrates music, dance, and video-making to connect people to a place's history, culture, environment, and ecology. Participants engage in collective movement exercises on-site and express their interpretation of the place through creative video-making. Through this process, music and dancing become integral to the spatial experience, providing opportunities for participants to discover new perspectives and reflections on the place.

Instructors

In addition to Prof. Dr. Anlı Ataöv and Dr. Can Gölgelioğlu, instructors from other domains include Bürge Kayacan (Choreographer from State Opera and Ballet), Enver Arcak (Film Director and Producer), Ziya Özsökmenler (Percussionist), Kubilay Demirkan (Drummer), and Sercan Peşan (Ney Performer / Neyzen).

Participants

The encounters is a program that involves students with a background in city planning and architecture. Its inclusive approach and collaborations extend beyond the university. It also involves craftsmen from the Khan region and residents of the studied places in various shared experiences.
